The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) welcomes comments on proposed standards and key elements that would serve as expectations for people graduating from a college or university prepared to teach health education at the K-12 level(s).
The School Health Educator Preparation Standards were drafted over the last nine months by a SOPHE Working Group of experienced school health classroom teachers, university faculty preparing school health educators, and folio reviewers.
The members of the working group represent the various health education professional groups with an interest in teacher preparation – SOPHE, the American School Health Association, the American Public Health Association’s School Health Education and Services Section, and the Society of State Leaders of Health and Physical Education.
The working group, chaired by Drs. Susan Goekler and Adrian Lyde, will consider comments in SOPHE’s final submission to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) for designation as a Specialized Professional Organization (SPA) in Teacher Education in Health Education.
Soliciting public comments and achieving profession-wide consensus on the standards and key elements is important to ensure the quality of professional preparation for future health teachers.
Comments on the draft standards and key elements can be submitted online by March 15, 2017 by individuals and/or organizations with an interest in school health education.
