Washington, DC – The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) in partnership with the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc., (NCHEC), awarded three students the Helen P. Cleary Scholarship.
The Helen P. Cleary Scholarship provides financial support to students enrolled in a health education-related degree program to take the national Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) examination.
The scholarship honors Dr. Cleary who was instrumental in establishing NCHEC in 1989 and received the very first CHES® credential. The scholarship covers the examination registration fee and study materials for these students to take the exam in spring 2024.
Certification is not just a goal; it is a commitment to the ongoing pursuit of excellence in health education. I view certification as a vital steppingstone in my journey toward becoming the best health educator I can be. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to take on this certification journey and embrace the challenges and rewards it will bring, and the opportunities it will offer for growth, learning, and making a lasting difference in the lives of those I serve.
My vision is for people of color like me to have equitable access to high quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in which their providers prioritize their autonomy, needs, and preferences. As someone who has had both positive and negative interactions with my SRH providers, as well as having been a provider myself, I plan to dedicate my career to improving SRH through health education.
I worked for over four years as a health educator at Clinica Tepati in Sacramento, where I was tasked with community outreach, health education, and health module creation. I managed and helped to lead the collection of data and extension of health information on chronic diseases that impacted the patients we served. I developed and designed health education materials in a variety of formats, including audio and video to facilitate training and education for a variety of learners. I learned that fulfilling your greatest potential in health education means not only delivering information in a motivational manner but it also means meeting each individual where they are, empathizing with them and being sensitive to their challenges.
