The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) and SOPHE are pleased to announce the selection of a distinguished 14-member panel to undertake the work of the Health Education Specialist Practice Analysis III (HESPA III) study.
The HESPA III study is a significant undertaking and helps to ensure the highest standard of competency and proficiency in health education practice. The national study is the basis for two certification programs managed by NCHEC; the entry-level Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®), and advanced-level Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES®) examination programs.
A call for nominations for consideration to the HESPA III study resulted in over 200 responses. The HESPA III study Steering Committee considered several factors including diverse perspectives, practice setting, level of experience, completed and timely references, and other key demographic variables for the 14-member HESPA III panel. The HESPA III study is a rigorous and thorough process, involving two three-day panel meetings with input from individuals who are active CHES® and MCHES® who work in various practice settings including community, school health, healthcare, college/university, worksite, and college/university health promotion settings.
The 14-member panel consists of seven CHES® and seven MCHES®. Beth Chaney, PhD, MCHES®, Chair, and Antonio Gardner, PhD, MCHES®, Vice-Chair, will lead the HESPA III study. Jim Henderson, Ph.D., of Credentialing Examination Consulting, will facilitate the study assisted by Ian Hembry, Ph.D.

- Brittny Bratcher-Rasmus, PhD, CHES®, a Program Manager at ATW Health Solutions; Adjunct Faculty at Texas Southern University and Purdue Global

The core work of the panel is to examine the current Eight Areas of Responsibility for Health Education Specialists to identify emerging trends in the practice of health education, which will inform preparation programs for health education specialists as well as help to maintain national and international standards for NCHEC’s dually accredited CHES® and MCHES® programs.
