FAHE to present Yuxian Cui with the Dr. Delbert Oberteuffer Scholarship at SOPHE Annual Conference

WASHINGTON, D. C., – The Foundation for the Advancement of Health Education (FAHE) will present Yuxian Cui the Dr. Delbert Oberteuffer Scholarship during the 2025 SOPHE Annual Conference in Long Beach, April 16-18.

“As a doctoral student researcher at GW Milken School of Public Health and a CHES certified by NCHEC, I am deeply honored to receive the Dr. Delbert Oberteuffer Scholarship from FAHE and to be recognized at the SOPHE annual meeting,” said Cui. “This award reflects not only the hard work and support of those around me but also fuels my passion for promoting public health, especially for children and youth.”

This scholarship recognizes doctoral students for their academic achievement, potential for advancing the health of children and youth, and professional goals in health education and promotion.

“This scholarship aligns with my dedication to advocating for policies and health education that benefit vulnerable populations,” Cui explains. “It reinforces my mission to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies through health education and communication.”

Yuxian Cui is currently a PhD candidate in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Department of Prevention and Community Health, Milken Institute School of Public Health, George Washington University. She earned her MSPH in Health Education and Health Communication and her MA in Public Management at Johns Hopkins University. Her research addresses socio-structural determinants of substance use, focusing on prevention and control through health education and communication.

“My research experience has shaped my commitment to addressing substance use through behavioral science,” said Cui. “Working with Dr. Carla Berg’s team has allowed me to contribute to NIH-funded projects that inform policies on cannabis and tobacco product marketing.”

Her dissertation research (Messaging to Reduce Cannabis Use among US Young Adults) is funded by the National Science Foundation. Cui has co-authored 32 peer-reviewed publications (including seven first-authored papers, with two additional articles under review) and has presented her research through 13 abstracts at scientific conferences, including the Society for Behavioral Medicine and the Research Society on Marijuana. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist.

Cui has served as a peer reviewer for key journals in the field, such as AJPM, Addiction, BMC Public Health, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Journal of Medical Internet Research, and Substance Use and Misuse, as well as for conferences including the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT). She has also mentored Master of Public Health students in health education and behavioral sciences, guiding their coursework and research.

“This scholarship stands out because it not only honors academic achievement but also supports future leaders in public health,” Cui shares. “This award strengthens my resolve to contribute to the field with the same passion and dedication that Dr. Oberteuffer and FAHE exemplified.”
