Behind the Label with the FDA: Ensuring Health Educators Understand the Updated Nutrition Facts Label
On May 20, 2016, FDA announced the updated Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to reflect updated scientific information, including the link between diet and chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease. The updated label includes a bolder font for the calorie listing, new serving size requirements, an Added Sugars declaration, revised % Daily Values, and an updated list of required vitamins and minerals, among other changes. This presentation will equip Health Educators to understand the major changes to the Nutrition Facts label and will take attendees “behind the label” to empower them to deliver effective Nutrition Facts label education within the communities they serve. Presenters will also discuss the FDA’s plans to educate consumers on the Nutrition Facts label and allow attendees to share best practices to help shape FDA education efforts.
