| School Health is Community Health
The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) recognizes the value of a coordinated approach to school health which promotes improved health outcomes, academic achievement, and the overall well being of school aged youth. SOPHE also acknowledges the crucial role that families and communities play in helping children adopt healthy lifestyles. SOPHE's School Health Programs is dedicated to reducing the risks associated with chronic disease among school-age youth by: fostering family, school, and community partnerships; and building the capacity of SOPHE chapters to partner with state and local health, education, and community agencies. As this website is dedicated to chronic disease risks among school age youth, parents, teachers, school administrators, and researchers can find information and resources on physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use prevention.
"A child’s health and well-being are fostered by a home environment with engaged and skillful parenting that models, values, and encourages sensible eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. The school environment has the potential to affect national obesity prevention efforts both because of the population reach and the amount of time that students spend at school each day."
